Keep going on the tide

Editor, Daily News:

We applaud Eric Staats for his coverage about the increased funding for red tide.

But why stop at the state level? We need to strengthen our national political voice for the oceans. Nonprofit political group Ocean Champions has been spearheading support for the Save Our Shores Act (HR 1091), the only bill in Congress that will dramatically increase funding for peer-reviewed research on red tides.

Florida’s U.S. Reps. Kathy Castor and Connie Mack IV introduced the bill.

It’s no surprise that Florida has incentive to engage political legislation that will get to the bottom of red tides. Florida has experienced an even larger number of serious health and economic problems with the increase in red tides.

Ocean Champions urges all ocean enthusiasts to support political leaders who make the health of our oceans their priority. Finding solutions to emerging ocean problems, like red tide, require us all to become more politically engaged.
