We Are the Champions/You Are the Champions

Posted by: Jack Sterne

We knew when we started Ocean Champions that we were going to have to hear a lot of Queen’s bombastic rock classic, but we really didn’t care because we knew the name captured what we were trying to do on a number of different levels.

While co-founder David Wilmot and I personally championed the protection of the oceans, we knew that wasn’t enough. We knew we needed to start getting involved in elections to build political champions for the oceans in Congress and key states, and that was the real genesis of the name.

We had no idea we’d be building an organization that could generate thousands of emails to Congress and that we’d be able to add such a high level of activism to our targeted political strategy.

But that’s what’s happened, and what’s become clear, as we near the five-year mark and enter our third election cycle, is that you are the champions. We can’t accomplish the mission of this organization without committed supporters like you.

So as we introduce ourselves to you in our new blog over the next few weeks, please introduce yourselves to us, too. We want to hear from you and get to know you better. The more we talk to each other, the stronger the organization we’ll build, and the more influence we’ll have in Congress.

And someday maybe we’ll get together and sing Queen together. Badly, of course.
