Leadership: As a member of two influential Committees (Science and Technology, and Transportation and Infrastructure), Congresswoman Edwards is in a prime position to address threats to our oceans and estuaries.
Most recently, she and Maryland legislators urged President Obama to reconsider siding with a proposal to allow the use of seismic air guns to explore for oil and gas in the Atlantic Ocean, pointing out that the technology is incredibly harmful to marine life and highlighting the importance of ocean protection as a means of protecting the Maryland economy, which largely relies on the seafood industry and ocean-based tourism.
She has also championed policy regarding harmful algal blooms. With the Chesapeake Bay plagued by toxic algae and a growing dead zone, Congresswoman Edwards has worked to provide solutions by advocating for the strongest possible Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Act, which was passed this year.
Congresswoman Edwards has also pushed hard to address threats posed by offshore oil drilling. Since BP’s devastating oil spill in the Gulf, she has pushed Big Oil on its technology for responding to spills and challenged the industry’s readiness for deep water drilling. Congresswoman Edwards has also established a strong record on sustainable management of our fisheries. In a short time, Congresswoman Edwards has become a leader in the Democratic Party, and is a great representative for her Fourth District citizens. With a strong and growing record on ocean issues, we are pleased to once again endorse her as an ocean champion.
