Leadership: As a member of the Hillsborough County Commission, Rep. Kathy Castor worked tirelessly to protect endangered coastal wetlands. In Congress she continues this fight by supporting initiatives that promote a healthy environment and clean water. Representative Castor introduced H.R 1091 (Save Our Shores Act of 2009) as one of her first acts in the 110th Congress. This legislation addresses the ever-worsening problem of harmful algal blooms (in particular, "red tides") that impact fisheries, recreation and tourism, and human health. Rep. She also introduced H.R. 5861 (Florida Coastal Protection Act of 2010) and H.R. 480 (Gulf of Mexico Economic and Environmental Restoration Act of 2011), which promote healthy coastal and marine ecosystems and responsible development. Rep. Castoris also an outspoken opponent of lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling. She opposed the proposal to drill for oil off the Florida coast saying, "New oil drilling near the Florida beaches is a threat to jobs and Florida's economy. We cannot allow oil rigs to be erected within miles of Florida's beautiful shoreline."
