[Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) and Hypoxia Research and Control Act] “This legislation takes critical steps toward protecting Lake Erie and Grand Lake St. Marys from harmful algae that has become an increasing problem for fresh water bodies in our state,” said Portman. “For the first time, we will prioritize the protection of Ohio’s fresh bodies of water, which is critical for our tourism and fishing industries. I’m pleased the President has signed this important bill into law, especially after visiting Lake Erie last weekend and meeting with local stakeholders.”

Leadership: Senator Portman has worked on a bipartisan effort with current Ocean Champion Jeanne Shaheen to introduce the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness (ESIC) Act. The bill will work by incentivizing the use of energy efficiency technologies in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Rob believes in an energy policy that develops all domestic forms of fuel and energy, fosters renewed investment in research, development and infrastructure, and encourages conservation and efficiency. He also is an advocate for clean energy industries in Ohio, including the nuclear power industry, wind, hydro, and solar power generation, clean coal processes, and the implementation of effective energy efficiencies, such as insulation, lighting, HVAC, and appliance refits, for homes and commercial buildings. Portman also sponsored the Global Conservation Act, co-sponsored the North American Wetlands Conservation Extension Act (NAWCA), and cosponsored the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Amendments Act of 2014. Additionally, he is a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, as well as the Subcommittee on Energy, and the Subcommittee on National Parks.
