Leadership: In 2000, Robert O’Leary, a firm advocate of ocean conservation, became the first Democrat in 40 years to represent his district in the State Senate. Prior to his election, O’Leary served as Barnstable County Commissioner, where he participated in the Cape Light Compact, which seeks to promote conservation, green energy, and consumer protection. In the MA senate, he is credited with spearheading the nation’s first ocean management legislation. He supports market based solutions to carbon emissions such as cap and trade, and is a proponent of costal conservation to protect the environment and maritime jobs. In 2009, he was honored with the Coastal America Award for his efforts to “protect, preserve and restore coastal resources.”
