Quote “The people of Maine have always been faithful stewards of our environment because we understand its tremendous value to our way of life. Domestic, affordable, clean energy solutions, improved efficiency, environmental protections, and conservation, will benefit the natural beauty of Maine, improve public health, and help ensure a higher quality of life for ourselves and future generations.”

Leadership: Senator Collins has worked across the aisle to protect our planet and public health while advocating for America to move towards a clean energy economy. She is committed to finding bipartisan solutions that will safeguard our environment and combat climate change. She supports commonsense policies that help protect our air and water, and has been a leader in the fight against climate disruption, including introducing legislation that would have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 83 percent by 2050. She has voted to defend the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to protect public health by cutting carbon pollution, and reducing mercury and other toxic air pollutants. Senator Collins has also been a leader in international efforts to combat climate change by sponsoring legislation promoting a global market for clean and efficient cookstoves, which would help address a major source of pollution in developing countries that harms public health and our climate.

Senator Collins also understands the importance of Maine’s outdoor heritage, which is why she supports the Land and Water Conservation Fund and Forest Legacy Program. As a senior member of the Appropriations Subcommittee that directs funding for all NOAA programs—from Sea Grant and the Integrated Ocean Observing System to fisheries stock assessments and cooperative research—Senator Collins has been a strong supporter of funding for key programs to protect the health of our oceans and fisheries. Senator Collins has also supported efforts to enhance ocean and coastal ecosystem resiliency, including through establishment of a National Endowment for the Oceans. She also cosponsored the Shark Conservation Act, enacted in 2011, which makes shark finning illegal. Given the effect of climate change on our oceans, Senator Collins has also been a champion for ocean renewable energy, including offshore wind and tidal power.
