Leadership: A Ph.D. scientist, educator, and self-professed environmentalist Rep. Ehlers stands up for what he believes and understands that environmental problems know no borders. Although his district is landlocked, Ehlers has made a career of fighting for the protection of the Great Lakes and the Ocean. He is opposed to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In 2002 he wrote and helped pass the “Great Lakes Legacy Act.” He still leads that fight as Co-Chair of the Great Lakes Task Force and by sponsoring H.R. 500 (Great Lakes Collaboration Implementation Act), H.R. 4755 (Great Lakes Ecosystem Protection Act of 2010) and H.R. 300 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Act).
