Washington, D.C. – August 11, 2016 – Ocean Champions, which works to build political power for the oceans by helping to elect pro-ocean candidates to the U.S. Congress, proudly announces their continued endorsement of six more candidates from Arizona, Oregon, and Washington: Raul Grijalva (D-AZ-3), Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR-1), Peter DeFazio (D-OR-4), Suzan DelBene (D-WA-1), Denny Heck (D-WA-10), and Derek Kilmer (D-WA-6).
“I’m happy to announce our endorsements for current ocean champions in Washington, Oregon and Arizona,” said David Wilmot, Ph.D., Ocean Champion’s President and Founder. “As you noticed, not all ocean champions come from coastal states.”
Congressman Grijalva (D-AZ-3) is the leading Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee. Not only is it important to have champions in Congress spearheading conservation policies for the ocean, it is equally important that they sit on key committees and hold leadership positions.
“Our world’s oceans are more than habitats for endangered species or beautiful scenery for a postcard,” said Congressman Raul Grijalva. “They’re the lifeblood of the planet. We can’t exist without healthy, functional, well-protected oceans, and I’m proud to fight for their continued survival. The era of treating them as a dumping ground or an afterthought has to end, and it will end when we elect more environmentally conscious lawmakers. I’m glad to be among them and I’m honored by Ocean Champions’ continued support.”
In Oregon, we are once again endorsing Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR-1) and Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR-4). Cong. Bonamici and DeFazio both have great track records championing legislation that protects our natural resources, including our ocean. It is very important that we send them back to Congress in November to continue this work.
Rounding out the Pacific Northwest, in Washington, we are endorsing Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (D-WA-1), Congressman Denny Heck (D-WA-10) and Congressman Derek Kilmer (D-WA-6). All three of these current champions see the direct link between a healthy ocean and a healthy economy. We want to make sure they continue their work in Congress on behalf of their constituents and the ocean.
“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of Ocean Champions and will continue working with them to preserve and protect our oceans,” Congresswoman Suzan DelBene said. “Taking care of our natural resources and protecting the animals that live here are all critical to maintaining the beautiful environment we cherish in the Pacific Northwest.”
“The waterways and coastlines of our region provide stunning places to explore and drive economic growth in our communities,” Congressman Derek Kilmer said. “That’s why I will continue to fight to protect the thousands of jobs these waters create for fishermen, shellfish growers, and the tourism industry, along with the clean water and natural habitats we need to pass along to future generations.”
