Quotes:

“As we all know, water does not stop at the state line. Policies in one state upstream will affect water quality in another downstream. This is a serious issue in my state of Maryland, where the Chesapeake Bay feeds from a watershed that includes six states and the District of Columbia. Inadequate environmental protection in any of those states can have grave consequences for the health of the nation’s largest estuary.”

Leadership: Representative Chris Van Hollen is a strong supporter of energy independence and improving the health of the Chesapeake Bay. He has voted to improve energy efficiency in homes in Maryland through the Rural Star and Loan Star Programs, Weatherization Assistance Program, and Second Generation Biofuel Producer Tax Credit Act of 2009 (HR 3985), among others. These programs and bills decrease energy costs and incentivize improved energy efficiency for families, laborers, and farmers. Representative Van Hollen is also a member of the Congressional Chesapeake Bay Watershed Caucus and has consistently worked to improve water quality and bay health. He introduced the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Fairness Act in 2012 to assist farmers in cleaning up the Bay, and focuses on controlling upstream pollution and cleaning debris in the Bay.
