“The Chesapeake Bay is a natural resource critical to our economy, culture, and heritage. You can count on me to fight to protect the Chesapeake Bay and protect the jobs that depend on it.”

Leadership: Senator Mikulski has been committed to ocean and estuary health throughout her 35 years of public service. She’s a longtime supporter of the Chesapeake Bay Program, which works across jurisdictions to bring groups together in order to reduce bay pollution and restore water quality. The Senator has also worked to reduce runoff into the bay by funding wastewater infrastructure projects and supporting agricultural changes. The Maryland League of Conservation Voters recognized her dedication in 2009, presenting Senator Mikulski with its prestigious John V. Kabler award for “outstanding environmental leadership and commitment.” Senator Mikulski took a leadership role in responding to the BP Gulf Oil Spill, and has since cosponsored the Clean Ocean and Safe Tourism Anti-Drilling Act of 2015 (S. 1042) to permanently prohibit drilling off the Atlantic coast. As the Ranking Member on the Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, Senator Mikulski also works to fund approximately 85% of the nation’s climate change related science.
