“Every day, our planet is endangered by actions that damage the earth for future generations.  I’m proud of the work that I’ve done in Congress to address many of the problems identified by Ocean Champions, chiefly climate change and establishing a national oceans policy.  We have a responsibility to be good stewards of the earth, and I take that responsibility very seriously.”

Leadership: Senator Schatz has worked hard to gain Committee assignments that enable him to fight for his constituents and their vital ocean resources. He sits on the Commerce Committee and its Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard Subcommittee, where his influence and savvy engagement ensure that Hawaii’s citizens are well represented.

As a Hawaii State House Member, Schatz led on numerous bills for clean energy, sustainable coastal resource management, and fisheries management. As Lieutenant Governor, he championed the state’s clean energy initiative, helping to triple Hawaii’s use far ahead of schedule. With his courage and understanding that ocean and environmental health are intertwined with economic and human health, Schatz is a true champion for Hawaii and our oceans in the U.S. Senate.
