Undecided Races Win!

Nov 16, 2018 in Newsletters

Dear Friend,

We have an exciting update to share with you today. Out of the five undecided races we highlighted in our Election Recap last week, our endorsed candidates have been declared the winners in four – all in the House and all new champions! Only one remains undecided – the Senate Florida race with champion Senator Bill Nelson. These four represent a big win for Harley Rouda (CA-48) vs. ocean enemy Dana Rohrabacher, Katie Porter (CA-45), Jared Golden (ME-2) and Andy Kim (NJ-3).

We are so proud that so many of you – supporters, activists, and friends – stepped up in this critical election year for our oceans and environment.  With your support, on election night, Ocean Champions helped elect 56 pro-ocean candidates to the US House and Senate, bringing the overall total in the next Congress to 73 ocean champions which includes:

  • Twelve first-time ocean champions – all NEW members to Congress in the House of Representatives
  • Not only did women have a tremendous showing on election night, but the number of women ocean champions grew substantially
  • Increased the number of ocean champions on key committees
  • Increased the overall number of ocean champions in the House and Senate – more than we’ve ever had before

Having more ocean champions in Congress will allow all of us to be in a much stronger position to defend against anti-environmental attacks by the Trump administration, and provide additional opportunities for advancing good ocean policy.

For the oceans,

The Ocean Champions Team

P.S.  Stay tuned for more on the Senate race in Florida.
